When the topic of Logistics or Freight is brought up, sending payloads to the moon is usually not one of the first things that come to mind. But to the folks at Astrobotic, that is all that is on their mind. With Pittsburgh's vast logistics history, it isn't surprising that the leading Lunar Logistics company set up shop in Pittsburgh and is blazing new trails to provide affordable end to end delivery services for payloads to Moon.
Pittsburgh based Astrobotic Technology is a privately held company that is developing space robotic technology for lunar and planetary missions. It was founded in 2007 by CMU professor Red Whittaker and his associates. The Peregrine is their small-class lunar lander. It is poised to carry out the first commercial mission to the Moon, and be the first American spacecraft to land on the Moon since the Apollo program.
On June 11, 2020, Astrobotic received a second contract for the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. Nasa will pay Astrobotic $199.5MM to take the VIPER rover to the moon (target November 2024).
They operate out of a 47,000 square foot complex - which is the largest private facility in the world dedicated to lunar logistics. Astrobotic uses the facility to build and operate its lines of landers, rovers, autonomous spacecraft navigation systems, and other space technologies. Payloads will be controlled directly from the Astrobotic Mission Control Center inside their headquarters located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s North Side.
It is exciting to watch history being made right here that has a global impact. This history being made wouldn't be possible without Pittsburgh's vast transportation & logistics foundation.
